We like animal portraits best when they come with a little abrasion. This fox sits up straight in a bright pink coat, painted in loose brushwork against olive green and teal, and it does not apologise for any of it. Put it up and a flat wall suddenly has a personality in the room. It earns its keep above a sideboard, in a hallway where you pass it ten times a day, or on a narrow stretch of wall between doorways. Pair it with velvet seating, warm brass, oak or walnut, and cream ceramics. Don’t crowd it with other loud colour work or hang it opposite a busy patterned wallpaper it wants one clear wall to itself. On fine-art paper the brushmarks and pink stay crisp and matt.
