Not because it’s sandy brown, but because it refuses to fade back. The sky does most of the work here a big, bright stretch of blue with tall white clouds that keeps pulling your eye up and out, so a flat wall stops feeling closed in. Hang it above a sofa, a sideboard or along a hallway where you walk past it every day; the landscape reads best when you can take it in from a few steps back. Pair it with linen, aged leather, pale or mid-brown wood, and pottery in sandy tones. Keep the wall around it fairly quiet busy wallpaper or a crowd of small frames will fight the open sky and flatten the sense of distance. As a canvas the surface picks up light like a painting, which suits the loose brushwork.
