Buy still life for the story. Keep it for deep red. The cherries do something specific to a room: they drop two or three points of near-black and glossy red into a space that is otherwise all cream, wood and soft light, and everything around them looks warmer for it. Hang it in a kitchen or dining room where you eat, ideally on a plain painted wall so the thick brushwork reads properly. It sits happily above a sideboard, a dresser or a run of open shelving. Pair it with pale linen, glazed stoneware, scrubbed timber and a little aged brass. Don’t crowd it with busy tiles, patterned wallpaper or other food photography one strong fruit picture per wall is plenty. As a canvas the surface echoes the painted texture and needs no glazing.
