Before anyone mentions folk modernist, notice what the deep red does to plaster. On a chalky off-white wall the face reads almost like a painted tile, and the mustard and green border pulls the warmth out of the surrounding paintwork. Put it up and a plain wall stops being background. It gives a room a handmade, slightly old-world feel without shouting. Hang it at eye level in a hallway, above a sideboard in the dining room, or on a study wall behind a desk. Pair it with dark wood, woven wool, and stoneware in earthy colours. Keep the wall around it fairly bare, and avoid crowding it with cool grey or icy blue pieces, which fight the warm reds. On premium fine-art paper the flat blocks of colour and inked linework stay crisp.
