Even the linen in here starts looking expensive next to slate blue. That flat blue block does the heavy lifting, and the cream border keeps the whole thing feeling considered rather than childish. Hang it over a low bookcase, a desk or a single bed and the wall suddenly has a focal point without shouting. It sits happily with painted timber, oak shelving, black metal legs and plain cotton or linen. Blue-grey and off-white walls give it the most room to breathe. What it does not want is competition: skip busy patterned wallpaper directly behind it, and keep bright primary-colour toys and posters a wall away so the inked detail stays readable. As a canvas it reads softer and matt, with no glare from a window or ceiling light.
