In the 1920s, this would have felt radical. It still does. One flower, one branch, and a huge amount of empty space doing the heavy lifting. Hung up, it gives a busy wall somewhere to rest the eye follows the diagonal branch up and then simply stops. It suits a bedroom above the headboard, a study wall behind a desk, or a narrow hallway where you pass it slowly. Keep the surroundings sparse: pale wood, linen, a single stoneware pot, off-white or soft grey walls. Don’t crowd it with busy patterns or hang it in a tight cluster of colourful pieces the space around the flower is the point, and filling that space undoes it. On premium fine-art paper the soft ink washes stay delicate and slightly luminous.
