Think of it as George Stubbs with less reverence and better instincts. The horse is painted quickly and confidently, so the room gets movement rather than a stiff animal portrait. On a plain wall it does the work of a window: the pale grey sky opens the space up while the dark body gives the room a proper anchor point. Hang it in a living room, a study or along a hallway where you pass it often. Wool, tweed, aged leather and dark stained wood all sit happily underneath. Keep the wall around it clear and avoid busy pattern or another strong animal picture nearby the horse needs quiet either side to hold its ground. On canvas the thick brushwork reads as real paint from across the room.
