Start with the burnt orange; it’ll wake every bit of plaster around it. The off-white ground does the quiet work, so the colour reads as intent rather than noise. Put it up and a flat wall suddenly has a focal point: the eye goes to the orange, then down to the black block, then settles. Hang it above a sideboard, a low sofa, or on a narrow stretch of wall between two doorways where a vertical shape helps. Pair it with oak or walnut, black metal, linen and a stoneware pot or two. Don’t crowd it with patterned wallpaper or a row of small busy frames it needs breathing space on either side to hold its balance. On canvas the painted, worn surface reads more like an original on the wall.
