In the 1900s, this would have felt radical. It still does. A single bird, a few bamboo leaves, a branch of pink blossom, and a great deal of empty warm cream space where a Western painting would have put a landscape. Hung up, it quietens a room rather than filling it. The blue head is the only sharp note, so the wall around it can stay soft. It works above a bed, a low chest of drawers or a desk, and it holds a square gap in a hallway well. Pair it with dark wood, cane, linen and plain stoneware. Don’t crowd it with busy pattern or a tight cluster of other framed pieces the space in the image is doing half the work. On fine-art paper the fine feather lines and the aged tone of the background stay crisp.
