Before anyone mentions Pop Art, notice what the mustard yellow does to walnut. Warm timber suddenly looks richer, and an off-white wall stops reading as blank. The bloom is big and central, so it does the work of a much larger picture without adding clutter. Hang it above a sideboard, in a hallway that gets no daylight, or on the empty wall beside a kitchen doorway. Pair it with warm woods, tan leather, cane and plain textiles in mustard, clay or deep green. Keep the surrounding surfaces simple: no busy florals, no patterned wallpaper, nothing else fighting for the same red. As a canvas the colour sits softer and the edges wrap round the sides, so it reads more like a painted panel.

Even the plaster in here starts looking expensive next to mustard yellow. That warm background does most of the work, and the deep red bloom on top of it gives a quiet room a proper focal point. Hang it where people sit and look up: above a sofa, over a sideboard, or on a dining wall that has gone a bit flat. It gets on well with warm brown leather, walnut, brass fittings and chalky off-white walls, and it lifts clay or terracotta paint rather than fighting it. Don’t crowd it with other strong colour work give it room and let one thing be loud. As a canvas the yellow reads softer and more painterly from across the room.
