Open the curtains at mid-morning; the rust brown will handle the drama. Daylight picks up the warm feather markings and the whole wall feels a little older and more considered, in a good way. Hang it in a study, a hallway or beside a bedroom chest, low enough that you can read the fine pencil detail as you pass. It sits happily with linen, aged leather, oak or dark wood, brass handles and a few stoneware pots. Keep the wall around it fairly plain chalky off-white or soft sage and resist pinning busy patterned pieces right next to it, because the pale background needs breathing space to do its job. As a canvas, the edges wrap cleanly and the surface reads softer and warmer from across the room.
