What it adds isn’t clutter. It’s vertical tension in the right places. Five cranes stride upwards through mustard yellow and green, and the whole wall gains height with them. A flat, quiet room suddenly has a focal point you can see from the doorway. Hang it above a sideboard, in a hallway, or on a narrow stretch of wall between two windows where the eye needs somewhere to go. Keep the furnishings simple around it: linen, teak or walnut, cream stoneware, one deep green or mustard cushion picking up a colour from the painting. Don’t crowd it with other bright pattern, and don’t bury it behind a tall lamp or trailing plant. As a canvas the thick brushwork reads as real paint on the wall.
