Think of it as Matisse with less reverence and better instincts. Flat shapes, a cool stare and a disco ball done in warm brown, tan and sage green rather than anything shouty. Put it up and the room gets a sense of humour. The colours are soft enough to live with every day, but the subject gives a corner somewhere to look. It earns its keep in a dining room, on a kitchen feature wall, behind a drinks trolley or in a snug where people gather after dark. Pair it with warm woods, tan leather, stoneware and smoked glass. Avoid crowding it with busy pattern or cool grey-blue walls, which flatten the warmth right out of it. As a canvas the matte surface softens the grainy finish and keeps the edges quiet.
