Against painted timber, the deep red reads less sweet, more deliberate. The flamingo is loose and hand-painted, and the blue and butter yellow check behind it gives the whole thing a grid to sit on. Hung up, it does the job a bowl of flowers usually does: it puts colour at eye level and stops a plain room feeling flat. Good above a sideboard, on a kitchen feature wall, at the end of a hallway or over a child’s chest of drawers. Pair it with painted or rattan furniture, striped cushions and blue and white ceramics. Don’t set it against busy wallpaper or another check the grid needs a plain wall to push against. As a canvas the brush marks in the check sit right on the surface.
