Call it vibrant if you want; we call it better walls. This is a hand-painted folk peacock sitting in a thicket of dark green leaves on a coral checked background, and it changes the temperature of a room fast. A plain painted wall stops feeling like a gap and starts feeling decided. Hang it above a sideboard, in a kitchen corner, or on the wall you pass on the way to the table. It sits happily with warm brown timber, cane seating, glazed terracotta and striped linen, and it lifts deep green or clay-painted joinery. What not to do: don’t crowd it with heavily patterned wallpaper, and don’t hang it beside another loud, colour-saturated piece. Give it clear wall on both sides and let it lead. As a canvas the thick brushmarks read well from across the room.
