Start with the mustard yellow; it’ll wake every brass fitting around it. This is a bird painted with real energy thick strokes, a red face, and blocks of coral pink and sage green behind it. Put it up and a flat wall suddenly has a focal point. Small rooms take it best: a hallway, a downstairs loo, the gap beside a kitchen door, or above a compact chest of drawers. Style it with painted woodwork, warm brown timber, rattan and simple stoneware. Keep the shelf beneath it fairly clear one plant or a stack of bowls is enough. Don’t crowd it with other loud pattern, and skip busy wallpaper directly behind it. On fine-art paper the chalky pencil marks and dry brush edges stay crisp.
