Most bird prints behave. This one picks a side. The heron stands upright against a warm brown background, with orange legs and flowers cutting straight through the blue water at the bottom. Put it up and a neutral room stops feeling careful the orange does the work of a cushion you would otherwise have to buy. It suits a slim wall in a hallway, a stretch between two doors, or above a low sideboard where the vertical shape has room to stand. Around it, keep the materials warm: teak or walnut, rust and mustard fabrics, a black metal lamp, a couple of earthy pots. Avoid crowding it with other strong-colour pieces. One loud thing on a wall is plenty. As a canvas it reads softer and fills a bare wall without any glare.
