By mid-morning, the watercolour hummingbird stops looking decorative and starts working. The pale background picks up whatever daylight the room has, and the deep pink flower gives a quiet wall one clear point of colour to hold onto. Hang it in a bedroom, nursery or a small landing wall, at eye level or just above a chest of drawers. It sits happily with linen bedding, cane and rattan, painted or pale wood furniture and soft grey, blush or off-white walls. Keep the area around it fairly clear; heavy pattern, dark timber and busy gallery clusters flatten the soft washes and steal the pink. One shelf of ceramics nearby is plenty. As a canvas the soft edges read a little warmer and matter, with no glazing reflections.
