A nursery this pared back can take one serious mustard yellow. That band of yellow hillside is the warmest thing in the picture, and it does a lot of work in a room of pale wood and off-white walls. Hung up, the room stops looking unfinished. Everything soft and neutral suddenly has a focal point, and a friendly one at that. Put it low over a cot, a changing unit or a bookcase, where a small person can actually see it. It sits happily with cream bedding, woven baskets, pale wood and a touch of soft green. Keep the wall around it quiet, though. Busy wallpaper or a crowd of bright cartoon posters will drown the calm out of it. As a canvas it has no glazing to catch the light, which suits a bright kids’ room.
