Think of it as John Singer Sargent with less reverence and better instincts. The brushwork is loose and confident, and the whole thing is built from warm brown wood, dark green shadow and one bright martini glass. Put it up and a dining room or drinks corner instantly reads more grown-up and lamplit, even in daylight. It works above a sideboard, beside a drinks trolley, on a dark dining wall, or in a snug alcove where you want a bit of atmosphere. Pair it with dark wood, leather, cut glass and blue-and-white china. Don’t hang it in a bright white minimal room with chrome and cool grey; the warmth has nothing to hold on to there. On premium fine-art paper, the thick paint marks stay crisp and matt.
