Developed to succeed the M3/M5 Stuart light tanks, the M24 Chaffee was officially adopted in 1944. The Chaffee had sloped armour on the turret and chassis and had considerable firepower from its main 75 mm gun, originally developed for the B-25 bomber. Rather unusual for an American tank, its designers adopted a torsion bar suspension. From January 1945, the M24 was also part of the 1st Armored Division in Italy and was even deployed in the Pacific, although it did not participate in the fighting.
