With an antique bird study, scale decides whether the study wakes up. Go too small and the fine feather linework disappears; give it room and the bird holds a whole wall on its own. Hung up, it brings a quiet, old-library calm warm brown, cream and one small flash of red against a pale ground. It works above a desk, on a narrow hallway run, or centred between bookshelves. Pair it with aged leather, mid-brown timber, linen and simple stoneware. Don’t crowd it with bright modern graphics or heavy pattern; the paper-pale background needs breathing space to read properly. As a canvas the soft washes take on a slightly matt, painterly surface with no reflections.
