Somewhere between Matisse and Fauvist painting, this heron refuses to behave. The brushwork is thick and quick, and the colour does all the talking. Hang it and a quiet cream room suddenly has a focal point the coral red pulls warmth out of the walls, the navy sharpens everything around it. It works best on a plain wall where nothing competes: above a sideboard, in a kitchen, or at the end of a hallway where you catch it on the way past. Pair it with mid-brown wood, cane and plain linen, and keep the surfaces underneath simple. Don’t crowd it with other strong colour or busy pattern one loud thing per wall is plenty. On fine-art paper the brush marks and dry-edged strokes stay crisp.
