After the warm afternoon light shifts, the nursery suddenly has a pulse. The puffin’s red-orange beak and dark green dashes pick up the last of the sun, and a flat sandy wall stops feeling flat. Hang it above a cot, a low shelf or a changing unit, at seated eye level so it reads properly from a feeding chair. It sits happily with pale wood, painted furniture, linen curtains and woven storage baskets. Keep the colours around it simple: cream, soft green, warm sand. What it doesn’t want is competition skip busy wallpaper, alphabet charts and clusters of small pastel prints on the same wall. One strong bird is enough. As a canvas the flat shapes gain a soft matt surface and a frameless edge that suits a relaxed room.
