Even the plaster in here starts looking expensive next to rust orange. That single warm throat and tail against pale cream paper does the work of a much louder picture. Hang it where people slow down for a second: a hallway between doors, above a small writing desk, or on the quiet side of a bedroom wall. It sits happily beside old books, dried flowers in a stoneware jug, cane furniture and off-white walls. Keep the wall around it fairly plain so the bird stays the focus, and don’t crowd it with big bold graphics or high-contrast black-and-white photography the soft pencil landscape behind the bird gets flattened by anything too punchy. On canvas the aged cream ground reads softer and more like an old museum board.
