Before anyone mentions early modernist painting, notice what the burnt orange does to plaster. On a chalky off-white or clay wall it picks up the warmth already in the room and pulls it forward, while the deep brown background gives the wall a proper edge instead of blank space. Hang it at eye level in an alcove, above a low sideboard, or on the wall beside a reading chair where lamplight can reach it. It sits happily with aged leather, dark stained wood, wool throws and simple stoneware. Keep the surrounding wall quiet: no busy patterned wallpaper, no cluster of tiny frames crowding in on it, and nothing shiny competing for attention nearby. As a canvas it reads softer, with no glazing to catch the light.
