On a north-facing afternoon, the soft grey pencil looks almost illegally fresh. The lines are fine and the background is plain white, so the wall around it starts to feel lighter and more settled. Put it somewhere you want quiet: over a bed, above a low bedroom chest, along a hallway, or on the wall behind a desk. It sits happily with pale wood, off-white or light grey paint, linen bedding and plain ceramics. Give it space either side rather than crowding it. What it will not survive is loud, high-colour art next to it, or a busy patterned wallpaper behind it. Keep the neighbours calm and this one carries the room on its own. As a canvas the white background reads softer and slightly warmer on the wall.
