With a single perched bird, scale decides whether the hallway wakes up. Small, it reads as a quiet detail you notice on the way past. Medium or large, it becomes the thing that sets the tone for the whole run of wall. The warm brown and cream pull heat out of pale paintwork, and the fine engraved lines give a plain wall something to hold onto. Hang it at eye level in a hallway or study, or above a low chest in a bedroom. It sits happily with oak, aged leather, linen and simple stoneware. Keep bright, high-gloss or heavily patterned pieces away from it they flatten the soft old colouring. As canvas, the cream ground looks a touch softer and more painted.
