Once the mustard yellow enters, the whole room stops apologising. It is a small dose of colour, but it lands hard against cream walls and plain cabinetry. Hang it in a kitchen or dining room and the space picks up a bit of humour a fish drawn in a few black lines, a wine glass blushed with soft pink, scattered gold dashes doing the rest. It works above a sideboard, on a short stretch of hallway wall, or in a run of two or three lighter pieces. Pair it with pale wood, cane, glazed pottery and simple linen. Don’t crowd it with heavy dark furniture or busy patterned wallpaper the loose line needs quiet either side to read properly. As a canvas it reads softer, with a matt surface and no reflections.
