Somewhere between Matisse’s cut-paper work and 1960s screen printing, this stacked pattern collage refuses to behave. Put it up and a flat, quiet wall suddenly has rhythm blue, orange, pink and olive green stacked like fabric samples on a table. It carries a plain hallway or a slightly bare living-room wall on its own, and it lifts a kids’ room without tipping into cartoon. Hang it at eye level on an off-white or pale blue wall, above a low sideboard, a bench or a desk. Keep the furnishings plain: painted timber, cane, cotton in one colour, a couple of white ceramics. What not to do is crowd it skip patterned wallpaper, busy rugs and other multi-colour prints nearby, or the bands lose their punch. On premium fine-art paper the flat colour blocks and printed texture stay crisp.

First glance: orange. Second glance: the pattern collage doing something smarter. Six bands of summer print sit one on top of the other, and each one hands off to the next instead of shouting over it. On a plain cream or pale wall it does the work of three separate pieces: colour, texture and rhythm in one tall shape. Hang it in a kitchen, a hallway, or a corner of the living room that has gone a bit flat. It sits happily with painted cabinets, cane chairs, striped cushions and warm brown wood, and it takes glazed pottery in orange or teal without a fight. Don’t crowd it with strong wallpaper or another busy pattern piece give it clear wall and let the bands breathe. On fine-art paper the small dots and speckles in each band stay crisp.
