What it adds isn’t clutter. It’s loose brushwork tension in the right places. The deep red field does most of the work: it warms a cool wall and gives a room a still, thoughtful centre instead of another pretty picture. Hang it in a living room or study where the light is low and lamps do the lifting late in the evening. It sits happily above a sideboard, a reading chair or a writing desk. Pair it with dark wood, velvet, aged leather, brass fittings and heavy linen. Keep the wall around it fairly plain. Don’t crowd it with bright graphic prints or busy pattern, and don’t put it in a cold, glary white corridor. As a canvas the red carries more weight and the surface reads closer to the original painting.
