Once the warm rust enters, the whole room stops apologising. A child’s room can drift into beige and good intentions; this puts one clear character on the wall and gives the space a point of view. Hang it above a cot, a low bookshelf or a chest of drawers, at a height a small person can actually see. It sits well with pale wood, cream linen bedding, woven baskets and a soft cotton rug. Keep the wall around it fairly plain off-white, warm white or light grey so the green background reads as colour rather than clutter. Don’t crowd it with busy pattern, bright primary toys on shelves right beneath it, or lots of small busy prints; the shapes need room to breathe. As a canvas the surface is matt and low-glare, which helps in a bright bedroom.
