In the 1930s, this would have felt radical. It still does. A single bird, a wall of water, and almost nothing else. Hang it and the room slows down. The soft grey-blue at the top reads almost like daylight, so a wall that felt flat starts to feel like it has air in it. It works above a bed, on a narrow hallway wall, or between two windows where the height has somewhere to go. Keep the things around it quiet: linen, pale wood, grey ceramics, brushed metal. Don’t crowd it with busy pattern or bright colour, and skip a second strong picture on the same wall. On premium fine-art paper the brushwork and the pale sky-blue edges stay soft.
