Not because it’s lilac, but because it refuses to fade back. The petals sit forward in thick, raised paint, so the flower reads as an object on the wall rather than a flat picture. Hang it in a bedroom above the headboard, over a low chest of drawers, or on the short wall of a landing where you pass it every day. It settles happily with linen bedding, washed cotton, pale or mid-tone wood and stoneware in soft colours. Keep the wall behind it plain off-white, chalky sage or warm grey all work. What it won’t take is a busy floral wallpaper or a hard, glossy black surround; the petals lose their softness against either. As a canvas the painted texture reads more like the original.
