Unlike most animal portrait art, this doesn’t wait for approval. The cow looks straight out at the room, and the room adjusts around her. Put her up and a plain kitchen or dining wall stops being background you get a focal point with a bit of humour and a lot of presence. She works above a sideboard, on a run of hallway wall, or at the end of a galley kitchen where the eye needs somewhere to land. Pair her with painted cabinetry, scrubbed timber, enamel and stoneware, and keep the surrounding surfaces fairly clear. What not to do: crowd her with fussy florals or a busy patterned wallpaper. She needs a little quiet either side to hold her own. As a canvas the soft edges of the fur read gently, with no glazing reflections in a bright kitchen.
