In the 1960s, this would have felt radical. It still does. A low-slung desert house, a still pool, and a palm leaning into the frame flat blocks of colour doing all the heavy lifting.

Hang it and the room shifts towards holiday. The sky blue cools things down, the terracotta and mustard warm them back up, and suddenly the sofa feels more deliberate than it did yesterday.

It works hardest on a clear wall above a long, low sideboard or behind a reading chair. Give it breathing room empty plaster either side, not a shelf full of clutter.

Pair it with tan leather, walnut or teak, a ceramic lamp in a warm tone, and a rug in sand or jute. Anything cane or rattan earns its place.
