Not because it’s purple, but because it refuses to fade back. The flowers are painted wet and loose, so the colour pools deep in the middle and thins out to almost nothing at the edges. Put it up and a plain, quiet room gets one clear point of colour without turning busy. It suits the wall above a bed, a sideboard or a low bench in a hallway, where you pass it rather than stare at it. Pair it with pale linen, light wood and simple cream ceramics. Don’t crowd it with other strong florals or heavy pattern the white space around the petals is doing half the work. As a canvas the soft washes read a little warmer and the edge is clean and frameless.
